REGARDING NSF SUPPORT:

The prelininary proposal has been sent to the following people at
NSF:

Dr. D. Don Aufenkamp, Head, Computer Applications in Research
	Office of Computing Activities
	National Science Foundation
	800 G Street
	Washington, D.C. Telephone: (202) 632-5743

Dr. Howard Moraff, Director, Techniques and Systems Program
	Computer Applications in Research
	Office of Computing Activities
	National Science Foundation
	800 G Street
	Washington, D.C. Telephone: (202) 632-5743

Dr. Kent Curtis, Head, Computer Science and Engineering
	Office of Computing Activities
	National Science Foundation
	800 G Street
	Washington, D.C. Telephone: (202) 632-7346

Aufenkamp is the head of the section which seems the most appropriate
for support of this proposal and Moraff is the program director
within the section. Max Mathews knows Aufenkamp and Curtis well, and
although the section headed by Curtis is probably not appropriate,
Max suggested sending him a copy nonetheless with the thought that he
can provide advice.

I have an appointment to see Aufenkamp and Moraff on April 1, to talk
with them about support for the proposal and any suggested changes.
I will phone or write the results of the meeting and you can contact
Andy Moorer (most likely to be at the A.I. Lab during working hours)
who will organize re-writing the proposal. You might then contact W.
Massey's office to see if they can be involved in the formal
submitting to NSF ( W. Massey will be in Washington around April 20,
I understand).

I will ask NSF to make any further contacts through your office, and
you can then relay to the appropriate person (Leland, Andy, John
Grey, or Loren Rush). They will provide for your file, memos of phone
converstions and copies of any correspondence.

In addition, copies of the proposal have been sent to:

	Dr. Max Mathews
	Director, Behavioral Research Laboratories
	Bell Telephone Laboratories
	600 Mountain Ave.
	Murray Hill, N.J. 07974 Telephone: (201) 464-2685

	Dr. John R. Pierce
	Department of Electrical Engineering
	California Institute of Technology
	Pasadena, Ca. 91109 Telephone (213) 795-6811

Mathews and Pierce are both familiar with our work, especially
Mathews, and can be considered as resources. Mathews will provide
well-considered advice and has offered to help in any way that he
can. Pierce, I don't know so well, but he looks favorably on both
the work we have done and the proposal.

Beverly Burlinson, Sponsored Projects Office (2883), has attended one
of our demos and can be of help in pursuing the proposal at NSF once
submitted. She can also suggest other agencies and foundations who
are potential sources of support.

REGARDING FOUNDATION SUPPORT: It seems to me that the best strategy,
here, is to contact foundations who may be interested and invite them
to Stanford to see what we are doing. I plan to return for a month in
the summer or fall to finish "the piece" and if we could coordinate
my return with visits of foundation representatives it might be
useful. We will provide a 3 or 4 page document appropriate to
foundation support of the Center, that is, non-technical.

Helen Shepherd (4471) is the principle contact re foundation and
private donor support.
